About McKenzie River Trailhead at Paradise Campground

Federal campground in Oregon.

Nestled in the heart of Oregon's stunning Cascade Range, McKenzie River Trailhead at Paradise Campground offers RV travelers an exceptional gateway to some of the Pacific Northwest's most breathtaking natural scenery. This national forest campground sits in an ideal location for adventurers seeking to explore the McKenzie River watershed, where crystalline waters wind through old-growth forests and dramatic volcanic landscapes create an almost otherworldly backdrop for your camping experience.

The McKenzie River itself is the crown jewel of this area, renowned for its remarkable turquoise waters and exceptional fishing opportunities. Whether you're an experienced angler or someone who simply enjoys watching the water shimmer through the trees, the river provides endless opportunities for connection with nature. The river's unique color comes from glacial melt and mineral deposits, making it one of Oregon's most photographed waterways. Beyond fishing, the McKenzie offers stunning river walks and viewpoints accessible from the campground.

For hiking enthusiasts, this location serves as a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the famous McKenzie River Trail, a 26-mile scenic route that meanders through some of the most pristine forest in Oregon. Day hikers can tackle various portions of this trail, discovering waterfalls, lava fields, and old-growth Douglas fir and hemlock forests. The volcanic geology of the region tells a fascinating story of Oregon's dynamic geological past, with lava tubes and unusual rock formations creating trails that feel almost otherworldly.

The campground's location within the national forest means you're surrounded by thousands of acres of protected wilderness. Wildlife viewing is common here, with opportunities to spot deer, elk, and various bird species throughout your stay. The forest canopy provides natural cooling, making this an ideal destination during Oregon's warm summer months when lower elevation areas can become uncomfortably hot.

The nearby town of Springfield offers supplies, dining, and services for RV travelers needing provisions. The Eugene area is within an hour's drive for those seeking additional attractions or amenities. However, many visitors find that once they settle into the peaceful rhythm of the forest, leaving the campground becomes optional, as the natural attractions immediately surrounding the area provide days worth of exploration and relaxation.

This campground appeals to a wide range of travelers: serious anglers seeking premium trout habitat, hiking enthusiasts of all skill levels, photographers capturing the region's natural beauty, families wanting an immersive outdoor experience, and anyone seeking respite from busy urban life. The combination of excellent natural attractions, relatively easy access for RV travelers, and the serene forest atmosphere makes McKenzie River Trailhead at Paradise Campground a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Oregon's outdoor treasures.

Paradise Campground did not disappoint. We settled in for 3 nights at campsite #52 right by the river close to the end of the season. Rich and Cam were great hosts. Not many campers so the campground was very quiet and peaceful. Will continue to come back. Lots of activities close by, but relaxing at the campsite was great as well.

Our tent site was backed up to the McKenzie River. The sounds of the river all night long was so calming. The park staff kept the restrooms clean and stocked. No showers, but flush toilets were excellent. Ez drive in and out. McKenzie Bridge services were within driving distance for ice, and a great selection of camping supplies.

This is a beautiful place but beware of noisy campers. We endured till 5am, drunk, obnoxious, loud, animal type behavior. No one slept in our group of seven. The camp hosts did nothing to quiet them. They did leave after one night, however, no campers should have to endure that.

Wonderful campground. sites are close but not on top of each other, with lots of shrubbery that separates some sites so you have a feeling of privacy. Lots of trees which means lots of shade. You can access the McKenzie river trail right from the entrance of the campground. The hosts Cam and Rich were fantastic! Always available, helpful, kind and informative; very hardworking. It's a large campground (60 something sites, I think) and very popular even though there are no hookups that I could see. Lots of large families in large RVs. Dog friendly. I stayed for 4 days in a small tent and felt safe and comfortable. I will definitely be staying again!

Beautiful campground, hosts are working hard to keep everything super clean. Sites on the river are the best and there are plenty of them. Some sites are v small, only space for one tiny tent (but plenty of driveway space). Lots of sites tho, we swapped for a bigger one w no issues.
