About Rock Creek Campground (Mt. Hood National Forest, OR)

Federal campground in Oregon.

Nestled in the scenic embrace of Mt. Hood National Forest, Rock Creek Campground offers RV travelers an authentic Pacific Northwest camping experience surrounded by towering Douglas firs and the gentle sounds of nature. This well-maintained national forest campground provides the perfect base for exploring one of Oregon's most iconic landscapes, where snow-capped peaks meet dense evergreen forests and pristine mountain streams.

The campground's location places you in the heart of outdoor recreation country. Whether you're an avid hiker, angler, or simply seeking peaceful mountain solitude, Rock Creek delivers on all fronts. The nearby trails range from gentle walks suitable for families to more challenging summit attempts that reward adventurous spirits with panoramic views stretching across the Cascade Range. During warmer months, the crystal-clear creeks and lakes in the area provide excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and water-based activities.

Mt. Hood itself stands as the region's crown jewel, and from Rock Creek Campground you'll have easy access to some of the most photographed vistas in Oregon. The mountain dominates the skyline with its magnificent glaciated peak, creating a stunning backdrop for your camping adventure. Many guests enjoy taking the scenic loop drives around the mountain, stopping at numerous viewpoints and day-use areas that showcase different perspectives of this geological wonder.

The surrounding national forest offers a quieter, more authentic camping experience compared to developed RV parks. You'll find yourself immersed in the natural environment while still having convenient access to essential services and nearby towns like Government Camp, which offers dining, supplies, and fuel. The cooler mountain elevations provide welcome relief during hot Oregon summers, making this an ideal destination for escaping valley heat.

This destination appeals to nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, families wanting quality time together in a beautiful setting, and anyone seeking to disconnect from the hustle of everyday life. The combination of accessibility, natural beauty, and diverse recreational opportunities makes Rock Creek Campground a memorable stop on any Pacific Northwest RV journey.

This beautiful hidden gem, located just a couple of hours east of Portland, is ADA accessible. There’s a concrete-paved path leading to the water and the restroom. It was one of the cleanest and best-kept sites I’ve ever visited. The reservoir was beautiful for sunrise and sunset paddles. Very easy to access the water from campsite so there is no need to drive to the day use area. Host sells fire... There was a guest who left a huge bio-mess in the bathroom overnight. The next day, we saw that she was up early and took it upon her self to clean it. It was evident that she genuinely cares and puts a lot of effort into maintaining her sites.

This place is great and the camp host, Jill, was a delight and quite helpful. It was super quiet and a great place to break away from everything. The reservoir was almost nonexistent this time of year, so we will have to go back when it is full. The only thing to be aware of is the over abundance of yellow jackets. They are everywhere. We had to buy extra traps to place around our camp site.

In mid-June 2024, I stayed at campsite 12, which turned out to be a spacious, well-kept, and shaded campsite. Looking at the site, you could fit three tents and still have room to wonder. Since it was early summer, it was a little windy. It got chilly at night, so I highly recommend bringing many blankets. Oh, be sure to bring your fishing poles and kayak when camping! Oh, be sure to bring your fishing poles and kayak when camping! There's a path that leads up to both the lake and to the bathrooms right off the site. This was a bonus. Fifteen minutes down the road is a small town which has a general store that has everything you need and then some. Whether it's a bundle of wood, a gallon of milk, or a tent repair kit, it's a nice feature when camping and you urgently need something. Cell service was a little spotty, but the cell reception would come and go, which was okay.

Had a great weekend at this campground. Sites are very tidy and vault toilets incredibly clean and well tended ---- both of these due to a great and diligent camp host. The location is nice, at the far end of the forest, but not far east you're in high desert. We ended up exploring portions of the Barlow Road (Oregon Trail) between here and Mt. Hood. We had not planned on recreating on the water here, and good thing, as the reservoir was almost empty. Don't know if that is what it is normally this time of year, or if due to weather, or what, but know that at least as of 8/17/25, the reservoir is very very low!
