About Sunset - Lake of the Woods (OR)

Federal campground in Oregon.

Nestled in the heart of Oregon's natural beauty, Sunset at Lake of the Woods offers RV campers an authentic Pacific Northwest experience. This National Forest campground provides direct access to one of Oregon's most scenic alpine lakes, surrounded by towering evergreen forests and dramatic mountain vistas that shift in color throughout the day, especially during the golden hours that give this campground its fitting name.

Lake of the Woods sits at an elevation that brings cooler temperatures and crisp mountain air, making it an ideal escape during warm summer months. The lake itself is a stunning destination for water enthusiasts, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming in crystal-clear waters. The surrounding landscape features a rich mix of Douglas fir, white pine, and other native conifers that create shaded camping areas and numerous hiking trails radiating from the campground into the Cascade Range backcountry.

The area around Sunset is perfect for outdoor adventurers of all skill levels. Day hikers will find numerous trails with varying difficulties, from gentle lakeside walks to challenging mountain ascents. Anglers appreciate the lake's populations of rainbow trout and other species, while photographers find endless inspiration in the alpine scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter deer, osprey, and various forest birds throughout the year.

For visitors seeking a balance between outdoor adventure and accessible camping, this location offers the best of both worlds. The National Forest setting means you're far enough from urban crowds to experience genuine solitude and natural beauty, yet the established campground provides necessary facilities and infrastructure. The surrounding region includes several small mountain communities with basic supplies and services within reasonable driving distance.

This campground appeals to families seeking nature immersion, retirees wanting peaceful mountain scenery, adventure seekers planning backcountry explorations, and anyone craving respite from summer heat in lower elevations. Spring through fall represents peak season, though each season offers unique character and fewer crowds during shoulder months.

It’s probably in terms of setup a four star. Reason I give it only 3 is because I was a bit disappointed by the lakeside area. The sites are away from it - most of them are and the forest is dense here. No visibility of lake or mt.McLoughlin unless you walk straight to the lake shore literally. In loop A at least also no dedicated trail or area so you have to pass the couple is sites that are ther... It’s probably in terms of setup a four star. Due to the dense forest it’s dark early and probably colder then it would be otherwise. I love forest and trees, but this is sort of deep in the woods.

Pretty lake. Very popular though so not much seclusion at the boat dock but it looked like a couple of people parked before the launch spot on the main road and had a nice private areas. We took a dip and it was cool but not freezing. Some small waves due to wind. There were a few nice trails to the north that were easy for running. There were small cabins to the south.

This year it's just not up to par. Restrooms have the same bugs and cobwebs everyday. Clearly NOT CLEANED as usual! I was there 4 days NEVER saw any campsite cleaned and mine had cans and trash. Table was covered in pine needles. These hosts are NOT great. Used to be pristine. Can't imagine how bad it will be as the summer continues.
