About Cape Disappointment State Park Campground - Campground D

Campground in Oregon.

Cape Disappointment State Park Campground - Campground D offers RV travelers an incredible opportunity to experience one of Oregon's most dramatic coastal landscapes. Located in Wahkiakum County near the town of Westport, this state park sits at the confluence of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, creating a truly unique and powerful natural setting that few campgrounds can match.

The park itself spans over 1,882 acres of pristine coastal terrain, featuring rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and windswept headlands that showcase the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The area earned its unusual name from early maritime explorers who were disappointed not to find the Northwest Passage, but modern visitors will find nothing but delight in this remarkable destination. The dramatic geology and ever-changing weather patterns create an atmosphere of adventure and natural wonder that appeals to both seasoned RV travelers and those new to camping.

From Campground D, you'll have access to excellent hiking trails that wind through the park's varied landscapes. The trails range from easy walks along the beach to more challenging routes that lead to scenic overlooks and historic lighthouse viewpoints. Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to capture the moody skies, crashing waves, and distinctive coastal flora that characterize this region.

The nearby town of Westport provides essential services and supplies, including groceries, fuel, and restaurants. This working fishing village gives visitors a glimpse into authentic coastal Oregon culture and commerce. The area is renowned for its excellent fishing opportunities, both from shore and via charter boats that operate from local marinas.

Wildlife viewing is another major draw, with opportunities to spot gray whales during migration seasons, sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, and numerous seabird species. The diverse ecosystem supports rich tide pools along the rocky shores, perfect for exploring marine life during low tide. Weather conditions can be variable and sometimes challenging, particularly during fall and winter months, but many RV travelers appreciate the dramatic atmospheric conditions that make this coast so visually striking. This destination appeals to nature lovers, outdoor photographers, history buffs interested in maritime heritage, and anyone seeking to experience the untamed beauty of the Oregon coastline.

Drove 100 miles out of our way to see the end of the Lewis & Clark Trail only to be told by the Ranger it was closed to camping. When asked why it was not listed as closed on google we were told it was on the website. Asked for a local recommendation to stay and he was not at liberty to recommend. Sorry, we are from Alaska and did not know about a website. Our fault. Cape Disappointment was Disapp... Stayed for 6 days. Usually we pull the RV but decided to try something different. I enjoyed the campgrounds and going back next year!

We rented a cabin here! We had a wonderful view to wake up to and lots to explore. The cabin was small, but warm even though it was winter. It was so nice! We'll be back!

It was quiet and peaceful. We didn't know the cabins had a heater, which helped since we thought we would all be bundled up all night. We brought our toddlers, who enjoyed playing in the grass and cooking out. My only complaint is that our cabin had the outside table running parallel with the front of the cabin and had the fire pit at the end, which made it difficult to set up and use our canopy... Other than that, perfect!

Really cool place, beautiful sights and hikes. I really dislike how close the campaigns are together. There are so many issues with dogs being so close to everyone else, and there was almost a fight that broke out between neighbors who made the whole weekend not much fun. It really takes away from the camping experience.
