About Champoeg State Heritage Area

Champoeg State Heritage Area is a popular state park near St. Paul, Oregon offering 79 sites for campers and RV enthusiasts. Enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities this destination provides.

Nestled along the scenic Willamette River in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley, Champoeg State Heritage Area offers RV campers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and authentic pioneer history. This 615-acre park preserves the site of the famous 1843 Champoeg Meeting, where early settlers voted to establish a provisional government for the Oregon Territory, making it a destination rich with American heritage and significance.

The park's location provides easy access to one of Oregon's most fertile and picturesque valleys. Rolling farmland, vineyards, and orchards characterize the surrounding landscape, creating scenic drives and pastoral views that showcase the region's agricultural abundance. The Willamette River runs through the property, offering anglers excellent opportunities to fish for salmon and steelhead, depending on the season. Whether you're casting a line from the riverbank or simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of flowing water, the river adds a serene backdrop to your camping experience.

With 79 RV sites spread throughout the grounds, the park accommodates various camping preferences and group sizes. The facilities are well-maintained and visitor-friendly, featuring modern restrooms and shower facilities to ensure comfortable stays. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for preparing meals and gathering around evening campfires. The dump station on-site makes managing your RV systems convenient, and pets are welcome to join your adventure, allowing families to bring their four-legged companions along.

Beyond the campground itself, visitors can explore two historic structures on the grounds that tell the story of Oregon's settlement period. Nature trails wind through the park, offering pleasant walks and opportunities to observe local wildlife. The proximity to Salem, Oregon's capital city, means cultural attractions, restaurants, and shopping are just a short drive away if you want to venture beyond the park.

This destination appeals to history enthusiasts, outdoor lovers, fishing enthusiasts, and families seeking a peaceful riverside escape. The year-round operation means you can experience the park across all seasons, from spring's wildflower blooms to autumn's golden foliage along the river. Champoeg State Heritage Area represents the perfect combination of outdoor recreation, historical education, and comfortable RV camping in a naturally beautiful Oregon setting.

Fun spot for camping. Even though the park is open year round, they close a lot in the winter and only RV sites, yurts and cabins are available for winter camping. Summertime there’s more tent sites and some group tent sites as well. The group tent sites are closer to the river. There is a dock but many signs saying no swimming. We bought a day pass and were happy with the service at the visitor centre. The washroom was clean. The park is lovely and lots of walking trails. We spent several hours reading and listening to the birds. On a hot day the temp is perfect in our hammocks in the shade. No river access is my only disappointment.

There are two camping sections within this park. One section is heavily wooded, and the other section in an open field. We found the section in the open field of the park to be our favorite with better views and most sites included sewer hookups. As you enter the park, a gift shop and museum are at the entrance. Our site was level. Only a few sites within the wooded area were able to a DirecTV satellite signal. Our Verizon phones got a weak 3G signal. Our family is currently traveling this beautiful country via RV style, and have been RV'ing for many years. Therefore, we have an idea between high-standard qualities and poor quality. We utilize Trip Advisor to assist us on locating top attractions, tasty restaurants and exciting locations within our wonderful country. Follow our adventure via Facebook; “Happy Campers 227”.

Great place for a picnic. Right on the Williamette River. Walking trails, dog run area, lots of flat open spaces, camping sites, covered banquet or party area all at what used to be the historic old town of Champoeg Oregon.
