About Bear Butte Campground

Campground in South Dakota.

Bear Butte Campground offers RV travelers a remarkable gateway to one of South Dakota's most iconic natural landmarks. Located near Sturgis in the northern Black Hills region, this public campground serves as the perfect base camp for exploring the dramatic landscape that surrounds this sacred geological formation. The campground's proximity to Bear Butte State Park makes it an ideal choice for those seeking outdoor adventure combined with cultural significance and scenic beauty.

The area surrounding Bear Butte has long held spiritual importance for Northern Plains tribes, and visitors often feel the weight of that history when gazing up at the distinctive peak that rises sharply from the surrounding plains. The butte itself dominates the landscape, creating a stunning visual centerpiece that changes character throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. For RV campers, the location provides an excellent balance between accessibility and authentic outdoor experience, allowing you to park your rig comfortably while still being surrounded by the raw beauty of South Dakota's Black Hills region.

The hiking trails around Bear Butte offer varying levels of difficulty, making the area appealing to families, casual walkers, and serious trekkers alike. Many visitors spend their days exploring these paths and discovering viewpoints that reveal the vast plains stretching outward in all directions. The elevation and terrain create a genuine sense of escape from everyday life, and the relatively remote setting ensures that you'll experience a quieter, more peaceful camping atmosphere than you might find at more developed resort-style facilities.

Beyond Bear Butte itself, the surrounding region offers rich experiences for curious travelers. The Black Hills contain numerous other natural wonders, historic sites, and outdoor attractions that make extended stays worthwhile. Whether you're interested in regional history, wildlife viewing, or simply soaking in the natural grandeur of this distinctive landscape, the campground's location puts you within reasonable driving distance of diverse attractions and activities that appeal to different interests and age groups.

We stayed here at the tail end of the 2025 Sturgis Rally. There were parts about this campsite that was amazing and parts that were a little cringe worthy. It was very rustic and low key which was great! The tent camping did not have assigned spots so you set up wherever you want! Plenty of large established trees to get some shade and a little more privacy. Getting to the site is a loose gravel... We stayed here at the tail end of the 2025 Sturgis Rally. The tent camping did not have assigned spots so you set up wherever you want! Plenty of large established trees to get some shade and a little more privacy. Getting to the site is a loose gravel road so be careful! There are rough roads on the campsite but you will be riding in the grass so be aware. Your bike will not stay shiny and clean :) There are very rustic outhouses throughout the site which is both good and bad. Great in the middle of the night when you gotta go.. but the smell will not go well with your after dinner drink. If you like to miss the craziness of the rally and be there at the tail end when it’s a little quieter, be prepared to scooch out of there by the Monday after. Everything shuts down! Toilet paper will be removed from the port-a John’s, no more paper towels at the very rustic shower building. Trash cans will disappear! The gentleman that checked us in was really nice as well as the workers that made our amazing breakfast burritos.

Your stay here does NOT include a ride wristband. The whole nightly entertainment is nonexistent. There is a kitchen but its hours are a mystery. The showers are gross. We had to shower in the dark the first night. Most of the toilets are just water troughs to do your business in. And their "rules" are only enforced for some people. When told about a group of punks doing mini bike burnouts at 3:00 am in camp their response was "Well, we couldn't hear it up here." Biggest disappointment ever. Won't ever stay here again. Hopefully somebody buys this place and revamps and reinvests in it. Because it has potential and 20 years ago was probably pretty cool. Got a call from the owner, Mary, to argue with me about my review. She didn’t really deny anything in my review, just said that it’s not fair cause it’s really expensive to run the place, she has told the guy who runs the kitchen to stay open longer, they can’t hire bands anymore cause it’s too expensive, and they can’t control what people do in her campground. But at no point did she offer to make it right with me by any sort of refund. Super awkward and unprofessional.

We ended up leaving and found another place to stay for the week during the rally. I would look for somewhere else to stay if you are renting a cabin or tent camping. No refund because they stated the conditions weren’t bad enough. WTH!!! One camper had water running across the floor and mold inside of it. Save yourself the trouble and find another place to stay!!!

Rustic campground 4 miles east of Sturgis. Main Shower house and laundry has flush toilets; the others are outhouse style. Snack shack serves a delicious cheeseburger! Mini-mart and bar also on site. Live music in bar during Sturgis Rally. Canned beer , etc. wood shavings on the floor—very rustic and very cool. Best for adults.

Campground is more than rustic….dirty, bathrooms and showers filthy, floors in cabins and trailers are very punky including the store(feels like you could fall through), trailer had nasty mold throughout, cabin was infested with spiders and cabins had bad smell. This place needs a state inspection badly. The only thing it has going for it is the location for Sturgis bike rally. There are a lot of... This place needs a state inspection badly. The only thing it has going for it is the location for Sturgis bike rally. There are a lot of other places to stay that are better especially for your heath. I got my money back because of the mold issue but my 2 friends in the cabins did not.
