About ROUBAIX LAKE

Federal campground in South Dakota.

Nestled in the heart of South Dakota's beautiful national forest lands, Roubaix Lake offers RV campers an authentic outdoor retreat far from the hustle and bustle of city life. This scenic campground is situated along the pristine shoreline of Roubaix Lake, where visitors can wake up to the gentle sounds of water lapping against the shore and enjoy stunning views throughout their stay. The location provides an ideal balance of accessibility and seclusion, making it perfect for both seasoned RV travelers and families looking to escape into nature.

The surrounding Black Hills region is one of the most geologically fascinating and visually striking areas in the entire country. Rolling forested hills, crystalline lakes, and granite peaks create a dramatic backdrop that changes character with the seasons. Spring brings wildflowers and rushing streams fed by snowmelt. Summer offers warm days perfect for water activities and hiking through cool pine forests. Fall transforms the landscape into a palette of golds and crimsons, while winter can blanket the area in pristine snow for those seeking a quieter experience.

Roubaix Lake itself is a major draw for the campground, inviting fishing enthusiasts to try their luck catching northern pike, walleye, and other species that thrive in these clear waters. Boating, kayaking, and paddling are popular activities for those who bring watercraft. The lake's calm bays and scenic inlets provide peaceful exploration opportunities that showcase the natural beauty of the region. Even without getting on the water, the shoreline offers excellent spots for photography, picnicking, and simply soaking in the mountain atmosphere.

The national forest setting means miles of trails are accessible for hiking, mountain biking, and nature walks at various difficulty levels. Whether you prefer leisurely strolls through the forest or more challenging backcountry adventures, the surrounding landscape delivers. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with chances to spot deer, elk, and various bird species throughout the year.

This campground appeals to outdoor enthusiasts, families seeking quality time together, anglers pursuing trophy catches, and anyone yearning to reconnect with nature. The highly rated reviews reflect visitor satisfaction with both the natural setting and the camping experience provided at this special Black Hills location.

We stayed at site 42D, and had great views of the open meadow (where we saw several deer), and an easy walk to the small lake. Our spot was perfect and quiet, though we noticed on the other side of the loop was access to a dirt road, and many ATV tours seemed to come through on both days we stayed. Otherwise, no complaints. There was a small trail to explore on the other side of the lake too, and a lot of wildflowers in June.

This charming little campground is a hidden gem! The host in 2024 was exceptionally friendly and helpful. While some spots can be reserved, some of the best ones, like ours, are first come, first served. The campground is filled with trees, and the scent of pine is simply delightful. I enjoyed the peaceful mornings running on my batteries before firing up my generator later in the day while I worked remotely.

Nice lake, the slide area is pretty cool, and very slippery. Plenty of areas to picnic ,fish, and go camping. $5 for a day pass, and they'll ticket your car. We tried to have a short picnic at a table and were shooed off by the hosts because it was booked already for campers.

LOVE this lake. It's our second year coming here and will continue to do so. Great camp sites and beautiful little lake. Kids love going to the stream and catching fresh crawfish. Caught some beautiful rainbow trout for dinner.
