About Amistad National Recreation Area Visitor Center

The Visitor Center offers several park-related movies. _Transparent Border_ is the park's official movie about how the reservoir came to influence a relationship between the US city of Del Rio and Mexico's Ciudad Acuña. It is available in English and español and is 35 minutes long. Amistad National Recreation Area Visitor Center offers RV campers an extraordinary gateway to one of Texas's most stunning natural destinations. Situated along the international border where the United States meets Mexico, this public campground provides direct access to the expansive Amistad Reservoir, a 67,000-acre lake formed by the Amistad Dam on the Rio Grande.

The landscape surrounding Amistad is truly remarkable, characterized by rugged desert terrain, dramatic canyons, and crystalline blue waters that create a striking contrast against the arid landscape. The reservoir itself is a focal point for outdoor recreation, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, and water sports throughout the year. The area is known for its excellent largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing, attracting anglers from across the region who come hoping to land trophy catches.

Beyond the water, the Amistad area presents compelling opportunities for exploration and discovery. Campers can enjoy scenic drives along the rim of the reservoir, hike trails that wind through desert vegetation and rocky outcrops, and experience the unique cultural intersection of American and Mexican heritage. The nearby town of Del Rio provides convenient access to dining, shopping, and supplies, while the region's rich history connected to the Rio Grande and borderlands adds cultural depth to any visit.

The visitor center itself serves as an excellent resource for understanding the area's natural and cultural significance. Staff can provide information about current conditions, fishing reports, wildlife viewing opportunities, and recommended activities based on seasonal availability. Bird watching enthusiasts will find the area particularly rewarding, as the diverse habitat supports numerous species throughout the year.

Amistad is ideal for those seeking a quieter, more natural camping experience away from crowded commercial parks. Whether you're a fishing enthusiast, nature lover, boater, or simply looking to experience authentic Texas borderland scenery, this location offers a memorable RV camping adventure in a setting that truly showcases the region's natural beauty and character.

I took my entire family, and everyone had a great time enjoying the natural beauty and open space. The boat ramp is very nice and easy to access, and there are several great spots where you can safely dive in and take a refreshing dip. Whether you’re boating, swimming, or simply enjoying the views, the area offers something for everyone. What truly adds to the experience is the rich history surrounding Amistad. The things that we were able to learn while visiting was Nothing shot of amazing. You can feel the significance of the land while still enjoying a safe, family-friendly environment. It’s clean, secure, and perfect for a day trip or extended visit. Highly recommended for families looking for both recreation and relaxation in a beautiful, historic setting.

Such a beautiful lake, never been on a lake with such beautiful water and in the shallow areas the water is so clear. The view is perfect for a picnic. Had so much fun. Depending on where you enter the walk will be long to the water, the water levels have been low.

It's right off of Highway 90 and really easy to find. We decided to hike the Sunrise Trail after asking a ranger lots of questions because it is pretty easy to navigate and only about a mile and a half long. Even after talking to the ranger, it was very difficult to find this trail because it starts at a boat business parking lot and signage is not very good. The hardest part of the trail is finding it. It's mostly flat with a few hills. After the trail, we went to the Governor's Landing area and used our camp chairs to relax by the lake and watch others fish, including some people who were part of a big bass fishing tournament. This is a wonderful place to get close to nature and take in some great views.
