About Balmorhea Lake

Campground in Texas.

Balmorhea Lake offers a serene desert camping experience in the heart of West Texas, where visitors can escape the hustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. Located in Reeves County, this public campground sits beside a sparkling lake that provides a refreshing contrast to the surrounding arid landscape. The area is characterized by wide-open vistas, stunning sunsets that paint the sky in brilliant oranges and reds, and the peaceful sounds of wildlife in their natural habitat.

The lake itself is the centerpiece of this camping destination, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and water recreation during warmer months. Whether you're an angler hoping to catch catfish or bass, or simply someone who enjoys the therapeutic sounds of water lapping against the shore, Balmorhea Lake delivers a tranquil setting. The calm waters are ideal for families looking to enjoy water activities without the intensity of larger, more crowded reservoirs.

Beyond the water's edge, the surrounding region showcases the rugged beauty of West Texas. The landscape presents dramatic geological formations and endless horizons that make for exceptional photography opportunities, particularly during golden hour. The clear night skies away from city lights make this an excellent destination for stargazing, with visibility that rivals some of the darkest skies in the state.

The area surrounding Balmorhea Lake appeals to diverse travelers. Nature enthusiasts appreciate the undisturbed environment and wildlife viewing opportunities. Outdoor adventurers find satisfaction in hiking and exploring the terrain. Retirees seeking peaceful getaways value the calm atmosphere and manageable crowds. Families appreciate the safe, accessible environment where children can learn about desert ecosystems and enjoy outdoor recreation.

West Texas's unique climate means that Balmorhea Lake remains a viable destination throughout much of the year, though spring and fall offer particularly comfortable camping conditions. The relative isolation from major metropolitan areas contributes to the authentic, away-from-it-all feeling that draws many visitors back season after season. This is a place where the pace slows down naturally, and the simple pleasures of campfire conversations and starlit evenings take center stage.

Great camping site. Quiet and great view of the stars. I am only giving a 4 star because there was a dead cow in the field an it really stunk....

Nice shallow lake for family camping. Just concerned that there were actual cows in the water, which could cause ecoli contamination. So swim at your own risk.

The whole family loves this little lake. Good fishing, camping sites right on the lake and it doesn't break the bank!

Great people supper nice really good folks. But..... The fishing is something different last 2 times I went fishing, fished for about 5 hours used all kinds of bait. NEVER EVEN GOT A NIBBLE. The fish was jumping and breaking water all around me. There was a small turtle hanging out by my line and even get him to bite🤪.

Check in was simple at the store. They charged me per night as customary for a full hookup site. I was the only one there other than the permanent resident at the far end of the area. It was peaceful and quiet and a wonderful place to bird and walk and enjoy the stars at night. It's a bit primitive camping but the full hookups allowing to connect my a/c was wonderful.
