Located in one of the state's most remote and pristine regions, this public campground serves as an excellent base for exploring some of the most dramatic landscapes Texas has to offer. The area surrounding Black Gap WMA is characterized by stunning desert vistas, towering canyon walls, and expansive views that seem to stretch endlessly toward distant horizons.

For nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers, Black Gap WMA represents a gateway to authentic Texas backcountry exploration. The landscape here tells the geological story of millions of years, with colorful rock formations and desert flora creating a constantly changing backdrop throughout the day. This location appeals particularly to those seeking solitude and a genuine escape from the hustle of everyday life. Birders find exceptional opportunities here, as the area hosts diverse bird species throughout the seasons. Hikers and outdoor explorers will appreciate the varied terrain and the chance to discover remote trails and viewpoints.

The surrounding region offers visitors a genuine sense of stepping back into a wilder Texas. The remote location means fewer crowds and more opportunities for stargazing, where the night sky reveals thousands of stars unobstructed by light pollution. There are two sites close to the HQ on the road in. There is NO bathroom or pit toilet anymore -- anywhere in Black Gap. BYO shovel. All told the WMA has ±30 primitive campsites (many with shelter and fire ring and out of sight of any neighbors) and another 25 fishing camps along the Rio Grande. A map is available at the HQ booth where you sign in. You can use the sign-in sheet to see which sites... There are two sites close to the HQ on the road in. Quiet remote place to camp near the Rangers Station, has several places to camp scattered through out the area, we stayed up near the Rangers Station where there was a vault toilet near by and a couple of picnic tables that are covered. Each picnic area has a designated fire ring that perfect for cooking that perfect steak ! I’d highly recommend camping here just outside Big Bend State Park!!

Four wheel drive a must and be careful when traveling a side road. You will get stuck. With no cell service to call for help satellite communication would be helpful. I had to finally get a tow service out of Alpine. They were great but it was my $1,200 mistake getting stuck. It is a fantastic lace if you really want tot go OFF GRID.
