This state park near Fredericksburg, Texas is beautiful. It is a huge granite batholith and the climb to the top of the mountain is totally worth it. You can get fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding from the summit. There are multiple hiking trails in this park, most notable among which are the Summit Trail and Loop Trail (the two we could cover in roughly 2-3 hours).

Beautifully early morning exercise. The park is really well maintained and not very busy if going in the first shift. Later on it gets busy as everybody wants to do the summit trail. Don't forget to take your trash with you. After the summit we enjoyed the loop and finished with the eco canyon trail. Only a nice 20 min drive north of Fredericksburg this is a great way to pass a few hours. You need to book a 2 hour entry slot in advance so we went for the 8.30 to 10.30 slot, which was ideal as it started to get busy as we were leaving. There's a choice of walks of differing difficulties and durations but as we didn't have so much time we headed for the challenging summit trail. Apart from a few rocky sections it's mostly a smooth rock surface and pretty steep in places but walkable all the way. It's pretty strenuous but worth it for the views at the top. We were lucky with clear weather and it wasn't so hot (early Jan) but I wouldn't fancy doing this in hot or wet weather, especially on the way down. Great short trip.

Super gorgeous state park with pristine grounds! Hike was moderate. Lots of toddlers and a few seniors. Clearly marked and nicely cleared pathways. I would go early (before 10) for quiet hiking and good parking. Kids have nature observation workbooks and at the end, they get a junior park ranger badge. I packed some fruit, beef jerky, and waterbottles. Highly recommended. Just make sure you pick... Super gorgeous state park with pristine grounds! Hike was moderate. A beautiful park with plenty of hiking. My sons and I hiked to the summit, and explored the cave. It's a challenging hike, not a lot of climbing but lots of step slopes. Wear good shoes, and take water! It's hot, and there is very little shade. I enjoyed the tiny tidal pools, little pools of life in an otherwise empty expanse of rock. The cave is a bit difficult to find - once you reach the peak,... A beautiful park with plenty of hiking. My sons and I hiked to the summit, and explored the cave. Slip between them and you'll find a passage into the caves. It's NOT a simple cave system, with plenty of tight spaces and large drops. Bring a flashlight, because it gets dark quickly! There are some white arrows to direct deeper into the cave, but they are mostly worn off. Overall, it was a great experience!
