Philmont was the trip of a lifetime, and I highly recommend it. It was the culmination of mine and my son's scouting careers. The ranch is stunning, from 10k snow-capped peaks to sun-bathed rolling meadows. The trails are challenging and especially treacherous in the rain. Our troop backpacked ~70 miles in the South Country, climbing Tooth and a few other spots. It was an amazing experience that w... It was an amazing experience that we will treasure for life. Recommendations: 1) training is key (~50 miles in prep hikes was not enough and we should have done some bouldering), 2) the food they provide is plentiful, but just fuel-expect nothing. 3) carefully inspect the gear they give you - we went through 5 tents with broken poles, torn corners, etc. 4) good lightweight gear is your friend and avoid overpacking (a down coat is a necessity). 5) follow all the rules (smellables, bear bags, fires, KP, water purification, etc) - they do work. 6) enjoy the journey (which is only really possible if you are prepared). Pretty much anyone can survive the ordeal, but one must embrace the whole challenge to achieve the full experience. Pack extra patience as based camp is not super-well organized. FYI: they do fitness test everyone and will keep you off the trail if you do not make weight and BP.

The staff were amazing and the journey absolutely incredible. We had an absolute blast, especially because of our ranger Lukas Wayne Copeland. He really made this trek special. There were some kinks in the road but they added to the overall campy atmosphere. We had a great time and if your’e considering going please do it will be an experience for the ages.

Amazing experience with fun experiences, beautiful views, and amazing staff. Luckily I was prepared and had a great time. I even got to carry two full packs up mount Phillips!

My troop, 471, went there in 2017. I am 22 now, and life is pretty bad. I commonly think back to the time I spent here, and smile very widely. I unfortunately didn't realize how good of a time I was gonna have there. Thank you to our ranger, Ryan, who led us through for the first 3 days as I got super sick and carried through the trip.
