The Grasslands Trail system is a fantastic place to explore—wide open grass fields, beautiful scenic views, and pockets of Cross Timbers–style trees that really make the landscape stand out. I have been coming to the grasslands for years. This was the first time coming with my 2 year old son. We visit a lot of state parks, but something about the area around TADRA felt a bit more pure. We had a beautiful campsite, my son and I enjoyed “hunting” frogs with our flashlight and taking the kayak to the near by 35 acre reservoir in the morning for a bit of fishing. Over all, I’ll continue to choose this area for those quick weekend camp trips with my family over the state parks, it’s just nice to be unbothered and left alone without all the governmental red tape and hustle normally found in state parks around north Texas, albeit a bit more primitive.

I mostly stuck to the yellow and red trails. They are marked by wood markers, colored ribbons, and spray paint on trees. However, these markers are fairly sparse. Parts of the paths were overgrown. It is also easy to take a side, parallel path that leads to nowhere. I had to back track several times to get back on track. I think this is great for horseback riding, but not necessarily for hik... I think this is great for horseback riding, but not necessarily for hiking. I only checked out a fraction of the trails, so maybe other areas are better marked and easier to stay on track.

Two miles of pretty bad gravel to get to the trail head off the main road. Parking seems to be limited. The trails are broken by the 🐴 hooves and it is hard to hike; however, it is a nice area and well worth the time.

LBJ National Grasslands is a national treasure. Amazing horseback and hiking trails. Great camping and equine accommodations. The trails are well marked and well maintained. No attendant, so bring $6 cash for the entrance fee, though I'm sure they'd appreciate a crisp $10 bill if you dont have change 😉
