About DOUBLE LAKE RECREATION AREA

Federal campground in Texas.

Nestled in the heart of the Angelina National Forest, Double Lake Recreation Area offers a serene escape into East Texas's natural beauty. This peaceful national forest destination centers around two pristine lakes that reflect the towering pines and hardwoods surrounding them, creating a tranquil setting perfect for those seeking respite from busy highways and crowded campgrounds.

The recreation area provides an authentic camping experience where visitors can immerse themselves in the forest environment while enjoying the gentle sounds of nature. The lakes are the centerpiece of this destination, inviting guests to spend their days fishing for bass, catfish, and bream, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. For those who prefer land-based activities, the area features hiking and nature trails that wind through the forest, offering opportunities to spot local wildlife and appreciate the diverse ecosystem of East Texas.

The location sits in a region rich with Piney Woods character, where centuries-old timber stands create a canopy overhead and the air carries the fresh scent of evergreens. This setting appeals to RV travelers who want to disconnect from urban life and reconnect with the outdoors without venturing into remote backcountry locations. Families find the area welcoming for multi-generational trips, while solo travelers and couples appreciate the quiet contemplation the forest provides.

Nearby attractions include other natural areas throughout the Angelina National Forest system, offering additional exploration opportunities. The region's modest infrastructure means visitors should come prepared and self-sufficient, but this also contributes to the authentic, undisturbed natural experience many campers seek. Bird watchers will find the area rewarding throughout the seasons, as the forest hosts numerous species drawn to these waters.

Whether you're planning a fishing getaway, a nature-focused family vacation, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat among the pines, Double Lake Recreation Area delivers a genuine connection to East Texas's woodland character and outdoor heritage.

Campsites nice. Park nice as always. Two issues that need to be resolved. 1. If the hosts are going to tell some guest but not others they’re outside the “bounds of the site,” mark the bounds of the site. We were within 10 feet of our pad and picnic area. 2. If two tents are the max include that in the email confirmation or on the actual data page for the sites. It is not either place in front co... Campsites nice. Park nice as always. It is not either place in front country sites I’ve never had a max infor ed or stated. Backcountry makes sense not front country. Would be a 5 if not for that.

Annoying camp "hosts" bend the rules at convenience. They engage in constant noisy activity. They know there's stray animals there and won't trap them. I have to pay a hefty vet bill tomorrow because my little guy was attacked. This place is incredibly weird. Avoid at all cost.

Great & beautiful place to camp, grill & picknick, hike, take a stroll, swim, fish or just lay on a blanket & watch the pineneedles glisten in the sunlight & sing quietly to you as the breeze blows them. Makes the world stop spinning so fast for a while 😊. If you enjoy simple nature experiences, this is an Amazing place!
