Great camp, changed my vein on wearing pants in the heat. The staff were very interactive with my troop and all the scouts in general, there's a lot of things you can do and a bunch of merit badges you can get, there's cavalcade, which is going out on a horse for 4-5 days in the surrounding mountains, they also offer two different hikes during the time that you are there, another thing they offer... For merit badges there's a lot, my personal favorites were life saving shotgun shooting and horse back riding. The pool is always really cold because of the altitude, it gets to 40°F in th morning and 50-60°F at midday. For food, breakfast can be pretty boring, lunch can be good and dinner as well. At the end of the camp they hold an award ceremony for anything the scouts do, like who shot the best in any of the shooting merit badges, and other shout outs.

I just spent a week at BTSR with our Scout Troop for summer camp, June 11 - 17, 2023. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the merit badge offerings, especially Horsemanship! The boys thoroughly enjoyed the merit badge offerings, especially Horsemanship! My son took the Cavalcade option and LOVED it! He rode horseback for 5 days/4 nights and stayed at remote cabins overnight. Head wrangler Dan and the rest of the wrangler staff made the Cavalcade fun for my son and were also great to work with. Kat was also very helpful and easy to interact with. The camp has a large pool which was a "brisk & refreshing" 67* in mid-June. I took the BSA Lifeguard course and the Aquatics staff were great to work with! Dillon, Silas, Gordon, Zach & Bill were knowledgeable and helpful and made the class fun. Bill worked with one of our non-swimmer Scouts all week until he was finally able to earn Swimmer status on Friday. Ranger Keith was great, very helpful and humorous. He and Kat made great steaks for the Scoutmaster dinner and he livened up the auction afterwards with his wit. The daytime temps were in the mid to high 90s (one day broke 100*) but the humidity is so low that moving into the shade was markedly cooler. The night temps were high 60s to low 70s which made sleeping very comfortable. Buffalo Hall & the dining hall are both air conditioned and most of us had to wear light jackets for breakfast to be comfortable in the dining hall. The scenery is amazing and the dark skies are great for stargazing. Make sure you get out of camp and take a hike or two! All camp personnel were extremely friendly & helpful. The counselors & wranglers were GREAT with the boys and made the week very fun for them. There's no cell service and the camp's satellite internet means slow & limited wifi, best for texting & emails only. Our Troop wants to go back to take the Cavalcade option! There were issues with every meal being served late and while the boys enjoyed the food, we adults thought the quality was a bit lacking. If not for that, BTSR would rate 5 stars.

One of the old staff member men working the food bar violently slapped my hand for trying to grab a dessert at lunch one day and said "You ain't got no damn gloves on". I did nothing wrong at all, I was minding my business. The old man was weird and honestly shouldn't be around children. I was like 10 at the time, so idk if he's still there or not. I LOVE BTSR! Rugged, rocky adventures for hiking, horseback, backpacking, camping. See Whiskey Bottle Flat by sunrise, visit Needle Rock, a sheer spire of granite or see Goat Cave. BTSR is a Boy Scout camp so join today!
