About Lake Somerville State Park - Birch Creek Unit

Campground in Texas.

Lake Somerville State Park's Birch Creek Unit offers RV campers an exceptional Texas getaway centered around one of the state's most beautiful freshwater reservoirs. Nestled in the gently rolling landscape between Houston and Austin, this 5,600-acre park provides an authentic outdoor experience where water recreation, wildlife viewing, and peaceful natural scenery converge.

The centerpiece of your visit will be Lake Somerville itself, a 22,500-acre reservoir that stretches across the landscape with crystal-clear waters perfect for boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling. Whether you're an experienced angler seeking trophy bass and catfish or simply want to spend lazy afternoons on the water, the lake delivers year-round recreation. The Birch Creek Unit sits ideally positioned to access multiple boat launch facilities, making it convenient to get on the water whenever the mood strikes. Many visitors find the early morning hours magical, as mist rises from the water and wildlife becomes most active.

Beyond water activities, the park embraces visitors who love nature in all forms. The scenic landscape supports diverse wildlife including deer, armadillos, raccoons, and numerous bird species, making it exceptional for photography and wildlife observation. The area's natural beauty shifts with the seasons, from spring wildflowers to golden fall foliage, ensuring each visit feels fresh and inspiring.

The location strikes an ideal balance for travelers. You're close enough to small Texas towns for supplies and dining, yet remote enough to feel genuinely away from urban hustle. The park serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader region, with charming communities nearby offering local character and hospitality.

Lake Somerville appeals to families seeking affordable outdoor adventures, retirees enjoying seasonal camping, fishing enthusiasts, and anyone craving peaceful days surrounded by natural Texas beauty. The combination of excellent water access, scenic camping, and recreational opportunities makes this park a beloved destination for RV travelers throughout the year.

Its a great place for hangout in the nature or do fishing. Other sides of the lake Somerville have many peoples, this section is quite and calm. You can enjoy your time nicely. Entry fee is 5 bucks. But I think if you are willing to do a picnic, this place really serves the purpose. Also, there is a good amount of fish available around this side of the lake.

This park is a hidden treasure. It is always quiet. The trails are inviting for walks, great for dog paws.

The park itself is beautiful and very pleasant to spend time with the family, the only bad thing is that they expect you not to make any noise while staying here, with 3 children and 3 dogs it seems complicated to me.
