About Hovenweep Campground

Mainly tent camping. A few sites will accommodate RVs up to 36 feet in length.

Hovenweep Campground offers RV travelers a gateway to one of the Southwest's most intriguing archaeological landscapes. Located in the high desert country of Utah near the Colorado border, this public campground provides an ideal base for exploring Hovenweep National Monument, where ancient pueblos and towers rise mysteriously from the canyon rims. The campground sits at approximately 5,100 feet elevation, creating a comfortable climate for much of the year with cool nights and mild days that make outdoor exploration a genuine pleasure.

The area surrounding Hovenweep is steeped in history and natural beauty. The national monument itself features six prehistoric villages built between 1190 and 1300 AD by ancestral Puebloan peoples. These remarkable structures, including distinctive square towers and D-shaped towers, represent sophisticated architectural achievements that have endured for nearly 800 years. Visitors can access multiple hiking trails ranging from easy walks to moderate treks, each revealing new perspectives on how these ancient communities thrived in this challenging environment. The scenic beauty of the surrounding high desert landscape, with its red rock formations and pinyon-juniper forests, provides a stunning backdrop for photography and contemplation.

Beyond the monument itself, the region offers numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation and discovery. The nearby town of Bluff, Utah, sits just a short drive away and provides essential services, dining options, and galleries showcasing local and Native American art. For those interested in broader exploration, the Four Corners region offers proximity to multiple national parks and monuments, making Hovenweep an excellent strategic location for a multi-destination Southwest adventure. The starry night skies in this remote location are exceptional, attracting astronomy enthusiasts and anyone seeking to escape light pollution.

This campground appeals to history buffs, archaeology enthusiasts, nature photographers, and anyone seeking a deeper connection to the American Southwest's rich indigenous heritage. The combination of accessible archaeological sites, scenic hiking, and genuine remoteness creates a distinctly different camping experience from more developed destinations. Whether you're planning an extended stay to thoroughly explore the monument or using Hovenweep as a jumping-off point for regional exploration, the campground provides the practical base you need to make the most of this remarkable corner of Utah.

Love this campground. The area is beautiful, there is a great hike you can do from the campground. The visitors center has WiFi and the restrooms were very clean. The parking for some of the tent spots is a bit tight so if you have a larger vehicle make sure the spot you pick has enough space. The best part about my stay were the stars and screech owls calling.

Lots of people still showing up and taking reserved spots. Yes it used to be first come first served, but not anymore and they have signs declaring you need a reservation. Yes it used to be first come first served, but not anymore and they have signs declaring you need a reservation. No campground host available to assist or solve disputes. Bathroom is but only one for the whole campground. Lots of smoking (weed and cigarettes) all over and with how close all the sites are together you are gonna get a lot of smoke in your camper if you open your windows. Fire pit also filled with cigarette butts. The monument is close by but honestly barely worth an hour to see. No signs explaining what anything is. Very busy for an out of the way campground. Upside was they had a stargazing party that was informative and cool to use th telescope.

This is a lovely campground at the top of a mesa. Shade shelters at each site, sites adequately spaced. Bathrooms have running water/flush toilets, and (one of my favorites) hooks on the wall to hang things when using the sink😁.
