About Lower Butler Wash Camp

Campground in Utah.

Lower Butler Wash Camp offers a genuine high desert camping experience in the heart of Utah's canyon country. Nestled in a remote landscape of stunning red rock formations and vast open skies, this public campground provides an authentic escape for those seeking solitude and natural beauty away from crowded tourist destinations.

The location places you in the midst of some of the American West's most spectacular geology. Towering sandstone cliffs, deep canyon washes, and dramatically sculpted rock formations surround the camp, creating a landscape that changes color and character throughout the day as sunlight shifts across the stone faces. The area's elevation and desert environment mean clear night skies perfect for stargazing, with minimal light pollution to interfere with views of the Milky Way and countless stars.

This campground appeals particularly to outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers who appreciate raw, undeveloped camping experiences. The surrounding terrain invites exploration on foot, with numerous hiking opportunities ranging from short walks to more ambitious backcountry adventures. The nearby canyons and washes provide fascinating geological study and remarkable photographic subjects for sunrise and sunset shooting.

The Utah high desert setting means visitors enjoy mild to warm temperatures during spring and fall seasons, making these ideal times to visit. Summer brings heat typical of the region, while winter temperatures can drop significantly at night. The remote nature of the location means you'll want to arrive prepared with supplies, as nearby services are limited.

The campground sits in a region rich with geological and cultural significance. Ancient Native American heritage permeates the landscape, visible in the rock formations and terrain that has witnessed thousands of years of human presence. This sense of timelessness and connection to the land's deep history adds profound meaning to a camping stay here.

Whether you're seeking a base camp for exploring Utah's incredible canyon country or simply want to immerse yourself in pristine desert wilderness, Lower Butler Wash Camp delivers an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of the American West.

Great place to camp with livestock. The first pullout has the vault toilets. Drive down a little further to the Mule Canyon and the creek has water, great trees to high line, nice hiking and the cliff dwellings and petroglyphs are a short hike up the canyon. No bathrooms for humans. No cell service in the wash/canyon. But I did get service on our hike just a couple hundred feet up. Beautiful vi... Great place to camp with livestock. This place is awesome. I have seen mountain lions here. Be aware of that. Fun fact: A scene in the book The Monkeywrench Gang takes place here.

Good spot for either rv ot tent camping. Many sites to use, and more are you drive down the road. The road is an easy drive. Some sites & side roads get sandy. At the main site there are pit toilets that are serviced regularly.
