Island in the Sky Campground is one of those places that makes you feel lucky to be there. It’s small — only 12 sites — but that’s part of the charm. It’s small — only 12 sites — but that’s part of the charm. We stayed at Site #1, which has an absolutely incredible view right from the van. Sunrises and sunsets here are unreal, with the colors bouncing off the canyon in every direction. The campground is first-come, first-served, but mid-week we had no trouble finding a site. By around 1 p.m., only a few spots were taken. Fridays get competitive, though — people start circling as early as 8 a.m., so plan ahead if you’re arriving for the weekend. There’s no water, so fill up at the park entrance by the visitor center — it’s the only water source in the entire Island in the Sky district. No electricity, pit toilets only, and cell service (Verizon) was basically nonexistent. That said, the campground is well maintained, and rangers clean the facilities daily. We camped, hiked, and biked around the area and loved every minute. The quiet, the night sky, and the open desert feel are unbeatable. Don’t miss the evening ranger program about the stars and constellations — it was a really nice touch. Overall, this is one of the best simple, scenic campgrounds I’ve stayed at. If you like solitude, big views, and dark skies, it’s perfect. Would absolutely stay again.

Lovely campground at the top of the national park, quiet during our early September visit. It's just next to the green river overlook and the night sky was stunning. Originally planned for three nights, we extended by one due to a hail storm.

First come first served primitive campsite. Arrive early, pick a spot, pay using the envelope and leave the filled form at your site to secure the spot. From the campsite, it’s just a short walk to the nearest viewpoint, where ranger talks (stargazing) are held at night. In the morning, deer visited us for breakfast. One of our favorite campsites!

Chilly in late November but amazing views and incredible night sky. Arrive early to find one of the 12 spots.

This is a lovely, quiet, shaded campground where I felt like "at the top of the world!" Vault toilets were very clean and stocked with hand sanitizer. There are shade structures over the tables, and trash receptacles. Individual sites were well spaced.
