About Moon Lake Guard Station

Federal campground in Utah.

Moon Lake Guard Station sits in a pristine mountain setting in the Uinta National Forest, offering RV campers a genuine connection to Utah's natural beauty. This intimate camping destination provides a peaceful retreat for those seeking to escape the bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in the stunning landscape of the Wasatch Mountains.

The location itself is remarkable, nestled in a high-elevation forest environment where towering pines create a canopy of shade and the air carries the fresh scent of mountain wilderness. The immediate surroundings feature the scenic Moon Lake, a beautiful alpine reservoir that serves as the centerpiece of the area. The lake's cool, clear waters are perfect for swimming, fishing, and peaceful afternoons of reflection. Anglers particularly appreciate this location, as the lake offers excellent opportunities to catch cutthroat and lake trout, making it an ideal destination for fishing enthusiasts.

The National Forest setting means you're surrounded by miles of undeveloped land and pristine wilderness. Hiking trails crisscross the area, ranging from gentle walks suitable for families to more challenging backcountry routes for experienced hikers. The surrounding terrain offers spectacular views of the Uinta Mountains, with opportunities to explore alpine meadows, forested ridges, and remote high country that few visitors ever experience.

This location appeals to a wide range of travelers. Families seeking a safe, natural environment for summer vacations will find plenty of activities to keep everyone engaged. Anglers and outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the access to pristine fishing waters and wilderness exploration. Those seeking solitude and a chance to disconnect from technology will find Moon Lake Guard Station perfectly suited to their needs. The cooler mountain elevation also makes it an excellent choice for camping during warm months when lower elevations become uncomfortably hot.

The nearby small towns and communities provide basic services and supplies when needed, though the remote nature of this National Forest location means planning ahead for provisions is wise. The surrounding region offers a genuine taste of Utah's mountain country, far removed from crowded tourist destinations.

Beautiful camp ground worth the drive for the view alone. Fishing was slow going from the shore. A few inflatable boats were on the lake and even one fishing boat. From the look of the boat ramp who ever launched from it was a brave sole and would not recommend attempting. Bathrooms were clean with flushing toilets. It rained on us every day but stopped in the evenings allowing us to have a fire.... Beautiful camp ground worth the drive for the view alone. Fishing was slow going from the shore. Each camp site has a nice concrete table and nice fire ring higher than most to help prevent the little from falling in. Their is a beautiful trail with a bridge over and inlet to the lake that was a easy one for kids. Would recommend boots as the trail was muddy in parts.

This is one of my favorite group sites of all time. The main reason is because each group site is fairly secluded and is not part of the main campground. The main reason is because each group site is fairly secluded and is not part of the main campground. It feels like you have an entire campground to yourself. There are two group sites here, and I have stayed at both of them. Each group site is a loop with multiple trailer spots. There are also quite a few areas for tents as well. We could have easily fit 7-8 RVs in a single group site, and could likely fit more if you wanted to squeeze them in. Our group also had a class A motor home which fit easily. Each group site has plenty of tables and a large fire pit. There are 5 rows of tablesin each suite. We had a group of 15 and we only used one row of the tables. There is water available at each group site. There isn't a way to attach a hose, so filling the fresh water tank on the RV is slow but it still works. No electricity or dumping station is available. There are pit toilets at each group site. These are cleaned daily. The lower site (which I believe is group site B) is slightly better than the upper group site. This is because the lower site has less traffic. The upper site is next to the main road and you have to drive next to the upper site to get to the lower site. The lower site is also closer to the lake.

My oh my was this location beautiful!!!! 😍 this is definitely on my top list of favorite places to camp. We did dispersed/primitive tent camping near the lake since we don’t enjoy large crowds at the campgrounds. It was so peaceful, quiet, and refreshing. Was nice to not hear buzzing of loud boats, people water skiing, or people blaring their loud music at night😂 I saw a bald eagle, plenty of deer, plenty of cows, plenty of squirrels, some type of hawk, bats from night fishing. We caught the most beautiful rainbow trout at this lake that I have ever seen. Was hoping to catch a tiger trout, maybe next time. Did a little bit of swimming only near the shore and the water was amazing. The only scary thing about primitive/dispersed camping here, since it was our first time in the high Unitas, was come at night time, we are pretty sure a raccoon came up to our tent and started scratching at it during the night because of a water bottle I had with tea in it. 😅 Rookie mistake, and will not be doing that again. Bring your safety with you to take caution if you run into the wildlife that might be ready to attack because we had no idea what it was, for all we know it could have been a bob cat or a fox, and our first thought was a black bear but it definitely wasn’t big enough haha. Anywho, this place is majestic. 🌙

Been going here since I was born. It’s mice to get away from the city every now and then. The people at the lodge are so nice and friendly. Thankfully they do have running water so no giant hole in the ground for a toilet. There are a couple of trails to follow which gives you something to do. The weather is always nice as well.

We love this spot and have stayed here for several family reunions. We stayed from Wednesday to Saturday. Group size has ranged between 40 and 80 with tents and around 10 RV's (site B). It's close to the lake with a pathway down to the shore line. We've only caught small fish here, my 9 year old snagged a 13-14 inch Brown Trout on Friday night using a rainbow colored lure. You can rent small fish... We love this spot and have stayed here for several family reunions. We stayed from Wednesday to Saturday. There is a hiking trail on the west side that stays above the lake for part of the hike and goes at least as far as the inlet. Great place to get away from the heat. There are toilets and running water. The bathrooms are pit bathrooms and not flush toilets but they were just fine for us.
