About SOAPSTONE

Federal campground in Utah.

Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Utah's national forests, Soapstone offers RV campers an authentic escape into nature without sacrificing comfort and convenience. This national forest campground serves as an ideal base camp for exploring some of the American West's most dramatic terrain, where red rock formations, towering pines, and wide-open skies create an unforgettable backdrop for your camping adventure.

The location puts you in proximity to some of Utah's most iconic destinations. Whether you're drawn to the otherworldly geological formations, scenic hiking trails, or peaceful forest drives, Soapstone positions you perfectly for day trips and extended explorations. The surrounding national forest provides endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, from fishing in pristine mountain streams to hiking trails that wind through aspen groves and past scenic overlooks. Photographers will find themselves constantly reaching for their cameras as the light shifts across the landscape throughout the day.

What makes camping at Soapstone special is the balance it strikes between accessibility and genuine wilderness experience. You're far enough from urban areas to enjoy true peace and solitude, yet close enough to reach major attractions and services when needed. The cooler temperatures at elevation provide relief during hot Utah summers, making it an excellent choice for those seeking escape from desert heat. Evening campfires under impossibly starry skies and the sounds of the forest create the kind of magic that reminds visitors why they love RV camping.

The surrounding terrain offers something for every skill level and interest. Casual explorers can enjoy scenic drives and short walks, while adventurous spirits can tackle more challenging trails and backcountry explorations. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with chances to spot mule deer, elk, and various bird species. The changing seasons each bring their own character to the area, from wildflower-dotted meadows in spring to golden aspen in fall.

Soapstone appeals to families seeking meaningful time together away from screens and distractions, couples looking for romantic getaways in nature, and solo travelers pursuing solitude and self-discovery. It's perfect for those who want to experience Utah's natural wonders at their own pace.

Soapstone is a great campground which I'd give a 5 star if it had water. Perhaps the US Forest service will get funding to fix the line someday. We love how close it is to the Provo River allowing fun activities each day by the river. Playing in the water and eating wild raspberries. It sits halfway between Kamas and Bald Mountain near the pass. Not too bad if you need to drive to other hikes... Soapstone is a great campground which I'd give a 5 star if it had water. Hated our camping spot, but overall the campground was okay. Bathrooms were terribly dirty and had a very pungent urine smell. Camp hosts never came by for 3 days on a busy weekend. No water or fire wood available. Also, our camp spot was angled terribly for the one way road it was on. Took a long time to get it in the right spot and we ended up going the opposite direction when we pulled out. I... Hated our camping spot, but overall the campground was okay. I think the road needs to be a one way in the opposite direction. We were able to access the Provo river, no clear cut path- but caught some little brook and cutthroat on fly.

Loop B has lots of sites that are related from other sites. Loop A has sites with direct river access. A quiet, pretty campground. The description says there is no garbage service, but there were several bear-proof dumpsters. Conveniently located near Lost Lake with day access for kayaking and paddle boarding.

So many nice sites! Plenty of room for larger rigs. Easy to get level. Most are well shaded and private. Soapstone is on our list of favorites!

This was a great camp site! We staying in site 17 and it was fairly large with a fire pit and picnic bench. The river was close too! The campgrounds were kept up and the bathroom was clean. We would stay here again!
