About Spruces - Big Cottonwood

Federal campground in Utah.

Nestled in the heart of Utah's Wasatch Mountains, Spruces in Big Cottonwood Canyon offers RV campers an authentic alpine retreat far from the hustle and bustle of city life. This National Forest campground provides an ideal base for exploring one of Utah's most scenic and recreational regions, where towering spruce and fir trees create a peaceful canopy overhead and mountain vistas stretch in every direction.

Big Cottonwood Canyon is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts at any time of year. During summer months, the canyon comes alive with hiking opportunities ranging from leisurely nature walks to challenging alpine trails. Families can explore the numerous waterfalls that cascade down canyon walls, while more ambitious hikers venture to pristine high-altitude lakes and ridge-top panoramas. The canyon's cool elevation provides welcome relief from Utah's desert heat, making it a perfect summer destination.

Winter transforms the area into a snow sports paradise, with multiple ski resorts just minutes away. Brighton and Solitude ski areas sit at the canyon's head, offering everything from world-class skiing and snowboarding to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Even if you're not a skier, the snowy landscape creates a magical backdrop for winter camping adventures and outdoor photography.

The location serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the broader Wasatch region. Salt Lake City lies about thirty minutes away, providing easy access to urban amenities, restaurants, and cultural attractions when you want a break from nature. The adjacent canyons offer additional exploration opportunities, each with distinct character and recreational options.

Anglers find excellent fly-fishing opportunities in Big Cottonwood Creek and its tributaries, while mountain bikers discover scenic trails suitable for various skill levels. The area attracts nature photographers, wildlife watchers, and anyone seeking to reconnect with the natural world. Whether you're drawn by outdoor recreation, peaceful mountain scenery, or simply the chance to unplug and recharge, this canyon campground delivers an unforgettable experience.

What mountain camping should feel like. Big trees, lots of shade, good space for the kids to play, especially if you book two sites next to each other. The restrooms must be getting renovated cause they were all closed, but the Honey Buckets were well maintained.

Spruce Campground on Big Cottonwood Canyon Road is absolutely stunning, especially in the winter. The snow blankets everything, creating a peaceful and magical atmosphere. The snow blankets everything, creating a peaceful and magical atmosphere. The trees look incredible covered in white, and the air is crisp and refreshing. The best part is the river that runs right by the campground. In winter, you can hear the gentle sound of the water flowing, even with snow all around. It adds to the beauty and makes the whole place feel like a winter wonderland. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy nature and the serenity of the season.

Nice campground in Big cottonwood canyon. Each campsite is clearly marked and has a picnic table and fire pit. Firewood is available for purchase. Restrooms were closed, but they did have porta potties.

We helped with several events at the cabin at the Spruces Campground. The customers were happy. We had a squirrel helper during one setup. We hope to do more events there soon. Thank you Arbor Meadows Decor

Great campground near Brighton and if you're up for a bit of a challenge, Day's Fork is a really pretty hike heading up past the group site! 3 miles out, 3 miles back and 3,000 feet of elevation, but the views towards the top are gorgeous!
