About Escalante Petrified Forest State Park Campground

Campground in Utah.

Nestled in the heart of Utah's stunning red rock country, Escalante Petrified Forest State Park Campground offers RV travelers an exceptional gateway to one of the American West's most remarkable landscapes. Located near the charming town of Escalante, this campground serves as the perfect base for exploring a region where ancient forests have been transformed into colorful stone and where dramatic canyon walls tell stories spanning millions of years.

The surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The petrified wood scattered throughout the landscape glows in shades of red, purple, and gold, creating an otherworldly environment that feels almost alien in its beauty. Wide Hollow Reservoir, adjacent to the park, provides opportunities for fishing and water recreation, adding another dimension to your camping experience. The nearby Escalante River and numerous slot canyons draw hikers from around the world, offering trails ranging from easy walks to challenging backcountry adventures.

What makes this location truly special is its position on the edge of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This vast area of public lands encompasses some of Utah's most iconic destinations, including the famous wave-like formations of The Wave, stunning slot canyons, and expansive desert vistas. The town of Escalante itself, just minutes away, provides essential services and charming local character with galleries, restaurants, and shops that celebrate the region's natural and cultural heritage.

The landscape here captures the raw essence of the Colorado Plateau. Whether you're watching sunset paint the surrounding rock formations in brilliant oranges and purples or gazing up at some of the darkest night skies in Utah, you'll understand why visitors return again and again. The petrified forest itself features trails that wind through colorful badlands where ancient logs lie partially buried in the earth, their crystallized wood catching the light like jewels.

This area appeals to a wide range of travelers. Serious hikers and backpackers love the proximity to world-class trails and remote canyons. Photography enthusiasts find endless opportunities to capture dramatic landscapes and unique geological formations. Families enjoy the accessible trails and the chance to see petrified wood up close while learning about the region's deep geological history. Even casual travelers appreciate the peaceful desert setting and the chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life while staying comfortably in their RV.

The best times to visit are spring and fall, when temperatures are moderate and the light is perfect for exploring and photography. Summer brings heat to the desert, while winter can bring snow to the higher elevations. Throughout the year, the petrified forest maintains its quiet, contemplative beauty, inviting you to slow down and appreciate the timeless wonders that surround you.

Beautiful place. The hike definitely had steep parts, but wasn't too bad. The rainbow loop is definitely worth it to see a lot more prettified wood than the main trail. Restrooms at the campground are the best I've seen.

Not sure how we found this little place just outside Escalante. It is well worth the $10 entry fee. Nice well marked and maintained trail through the Petrified Forest. It's a fairly short loop, maybe a little over a mile? There is an extension you can do called the Rainbow Loop. There is an extension you can do called the Rainbow Loop. While it is a little steep going down and then back up, it's well worth it because this is where you'll see the best and most abundant sample of petrified wood. They have a visitor Center and gift shop. A nice park area with playground and places for people to camp.

Campground spaces are close to each other. Not a good campground for big rigs, check site length and width carefully. Loop A very tight (see photo of 5 spaces). Good stop off for showers, water and dump (cost extra) and to visit sites in the area.

Beautiful play to hike around. Unfortunately we got here close to sunset so we didn't get a chance to explore much. I will definitely be back when I have more time

Very nice trail through the hills, Rainbow loop is spectacular with many petrified pieces, highly recommended. Be aware it's steep and uneven terrain, wear hiking shoes.
