About American Alpine Club New River Gorge Campground

Campground in Virginia.

Nestled in the heart of West Virginia's stunning New River Gorge region, this public campground offers RV travelers an ideal base for exploring one of America's most dramatic natural landscapes. The New River Gorge is famous for its breathtaking scenery, with towering sandstone cliffs rising hundreds of feet above the winding river below. The area attracts visitors from across the country who come to experience world-class outdoor recreation in a setting that feels remote and pristine yet remains accessible to modern travelers.

The campground's location places you within easy reach of numerous hiking trails that range from leisurely riverside walks to challenging mountain hikes. The iconic New River Gorge Bridge, one of the longest steel arch bridges in the world, stands as a remarkable engineering feat and provides spectacular photo opportunities. Many visitors spend their days exploring the various overlooks and trailheads that dot the region, each offering unique perspectives of the gorge's dramatic terrain and the river winding through it.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them occupied during their stay. The New River itself is popular for whitewater rafting, with numerous outfitters nearby offering guided trips suitable for various skill levels. Rock climbing is another major draw for the area, with climbers coming from around the world to tackle the sandstone formations. For those preferring less strenuous activities, scenic drives through the region provide stunning views, and picnicking areas along the river offer peaceful spots to relax and soak in the natural beauty.

The surrounding region has a rich history tied to coal mining and Appalachian culture. Small towns nearby offer local restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions that provide insight into the area's heritage. Visitors interested in history can explore museum exhibits and historic sites that tell the story of the region's past. The fall season transforms the gorge into a spectacular display of autumn colors, making it a particularly popular time to visit.

This location appeals to a wide range of travelers including adventure seekers, nature photographers, families looking for outdoor experiences, and anyone seeking respite in one of the Eastern United States' most visually striking natural areas. The combination of accessible amenities and proximity to world-class outdoor recreation makes this a compelling destination for RV camping throughout the year.

I loved this campground! And will stay there next time we camp out to go rock climbing in NRG NP. The sites are wonderful with nice flat decks for tents and room to park a car or two. There is a picnic table. And while there are not fire rings there are communal fire pits that foster gathering. The staff is friendly, informative, and top notch communication and customer service. The communal bathrooms are private and clean, and there's a handy area to wash dishes and get fresh water. I have zero complaints and would not change a thing about this campground 10/10.

The vehicle spots aren’t safe, being uneven spots (one even looked like something you could wreck just pulling into). The showers are pretty uninviting, with towels and stuff just kind of scattered everywhere. It’s also just tiny and overall I can’t recommend it.

First, the downsides: Men and women share the bathrooms and shower area. My wife and I are conservative Christian climbers who don’t embrace the left-leaning policies of gender-neutral bathrooms. My wife and I are conservative Christian climbers who don’t embrace the left-leaning policies of gender-neutral bathrooms. It did make my wife uncomfortable when she found out that men would be in her area of showering and using the restroom. The showers and toilets do have doors, but like any restroom area, the doors have cracks which people can easily peep through if they wanted to. I assume this facility used to have separated bathroom/shower areas (because one side has open urinals and the other side does not). As of this post, both sides have gender neutral signage and a note that asks guests to leave bathroom doors open. My wife and I tolerated it but I had to go with her while she showered to make her feel comfortable. My only other complaint is that the quiet hours were not abided by and not enforced. Loud shrieking laughter was heard from our “private” tent site till around 1 in the morning. I know this one is hard for campgrounds to manage, and people were probably just having fun- not knowing how loud they were being- so this critique is not as big a deal. So if that doesn’t bother you, here are the reasons I still give the campground 4 stars: Fair pricing Great location to Junkyard and Bridge climbing areas Very clean camp grounds Very clean bathrooms (despite the earlier complaint) Pet friendly Easy check in process. I did also see a bouldering wall, but no holds were on it. Ironically- there appeared to be a stripper pole set up in the common area- I guess it’s a new trend of “exercise”. Conclusion: despite the great quality and location of a campground, my wife and I hold conservative values, so we will be looking for other options next time we go to the New.

Very cool place with a unique vibe to other campgrounds. Everyone was extremely friendly and the facilities were top notch. The dish wash skinks were a fantastic resource. I've never seen such a relaxed vibe and welcome feeling from staff and guests. I've never seen such a relaxed vibe and welcome feeling from staff and guests. The communal camping area was a little more crowded than what I understood from the map and parking is limited but the overflow lot isn't too far of a walk. For the weekend of memorial day 23' the campground had double booked one site with my party and another. AAC was extremely apologetic of their mistake and went to considerable lengths to accommodate both parties. Definitely would stay again.

Stayed at vehicle site #2 (not fully level, but I also have a very short wheelbase which doesn’t help). Bathrooms were clean and the campground is very nice, also quiet. The location is prime time for exploring New River Gorge. Will absolutely come back! It’s also convenient there’s a market maybe a half mile down the road that has really good breakfast and anything essentials you may need.
