Camp Powhatan, Blue Ridge Mountain Council. What a great experience, the staff was great, our Youth had a great time, and our Adult Leaders were pleased with the adult programs offered. We were never left with unanswered questions, or not greated with a smile. We will be back :)

Avoid. If you do go make sure your scouts bring plenty of money for the snack bar since they barely give them enough food. But I'm sure that isn't an accident.

Love this campground even if there are fewer merit badges than some larger summer camps and the high adventure program is a little understaffed.

I cannot recommend Camp Powhatan enough. Our troop had an amazing experience! Not only was the camp just naturally stunning the campsites and facilities were well taken care of. There were a few maintenance issues however that's what happens when a large group of teenagers go anywhere. The tents and cots were in very good shape as well as the shared shower house nearest to our campsite (Rockridge)... I cannot recommend Camp Powhatan enough. Our troop had an amazing experience! Not only was the camp just naturally stunning the campsites and facilities were well taken care of. There were a few maintenance issues however that's what happens when a large group of teenagers go anywhere. The tents and cots were in very good shape as well as the shared shower house nearest to our campsite (Rockridge). I cannot stress enough how incredible the staff was! I didn't come across a single member of the staff that didn't have a positive and helpful attitude. One member of the staff (Cara) even let a couple of our leaders use her office when a private area was needed for work/schoolwork. The merit badge councilors were patient and knowledgeable and our scouts really seemed to like them. The terrain in the main camp was easy to walk. There were a few areas where there were long stairways or paths up and down hills however the majority of the main camp only had a very gradual incline from where our campsite was (Rockridge) to the dining hall. Most of the merit badge areas were a short walk from each other and the dining hall. I'd say that the longest walk between classes that a scout would have to take would be maybe 10 minutes. The camp store was well stocked and clean with plenty of quality souvenirs and necessities for sale. There was a snack bar attached to the store that had very reasonable prices with a wide variety of food and drink options. . Speaking of food, before our arrival I had read the reviews and I was a little concerned about the amount of food served in the dining hall. There wasn't a meal that anyone left hungry. Not only was there a main meal served there were also alternative options available such as a salad bar that featured a soup at lunch and another item at dinner (for example one evening there was a baked potato bar in addition to the salad bar). At breakfast there was always the option of a yogurt bar with toppings, cereal, and either oatmeal or grits. Meals were served family style, however, unlike other camps that we've attended, this didn't make the meals feel rushed. All three meals were split into two shifts so the dining hall was never packed. The food was typical camp food but all in all very good. Most meals were enjoyed by the majority of our troop but there were a couple of items that weren't crowd favorites, but that's bound to happen anywhere. Food allergies were taken very seriously and there was a dietary needs table staffed at all meals for food safety confirmation. We have two members with common food allergies and one with a less common allergy. At no point were there any items that contained one of our allergens. Alternative items were provided to campers that needed them. The Scoutmaster Lounge was the best I've encountered. It was centrally located and set up for both relaxation and work. There were three comfortable couches, a recliner, a large dining table with chairs and then a long desk area with storage drawers along one wall with a line of power outlets along the whole wall so that multiple leaders could work or do training as needed. There was also coffee and a microwave. The wifi was fairly reliable there as well. There was a porch with rocking chairs with a nice view too. The wifi was for adult use only which essentially turned every scout's phones into just a camera. It was so nice that our scouts were able to use their phones to take pictures at camp without being sucked into any form of social media or outside distractions. That being said though, there was virtually no cell service. All calls had to be made through the wifi and there were only a couple of places that was possible. The camp did have a couple of landlines that could be used though. All around this was an amazing summer camp experience for our troop. We are highly impressed with the staff and the facilities. We traveled over five hours to attend and it was so worth the trip! Thank you, Camp Powhatan! Keep up the exceptional work!
