About Bluestone State Park

This recreation area is part of Bluestone Lake

Bluestone State Park in Virginia offers a peaceful retreat into nature for RV enthusiasts seeking a balance of outdoor adventure and scenic beauty. Located in southern West Virginia's Appalachian region, this state park provides an ideal base for exploring one of the most picturesque areas in the eastern United States. The park sits along the stunning Bluestone River, a waterway that has carved dramatic gorges through the ancient mountains and created some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the region.

The natural setting at Bluestone State Park is nothing short of spectacular. The Bluestone River runs crystal clear through the valley, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy water activities including boating, fishing, and swimming during warmer months. The surrounding forested hills display a rich tapestry of native Appalachian vegetation, with towering oak, hickory, and evergreen trees providing shade and creating a deeply immersive nature experience. Whether you're an early riser who enjoys watching mist rise from the river valley at dawn or someone who prefers sunset views over the water, the park delivers memorable moments throughout the day.

For those who love outdoor recreation, the park and surrounding area provide abundant opportunities. Hiking trails wind through the forest and along the riverbanks, offering everything from leisurely walks to more challenging treks. The Bluestone Gorge area presents some particularly dramatic scenery for photographers and nature lovers. Fishing enthusiasts will find the river home to various fish species, making it a productive destination for anglers of all skill levels. The park's location also makes it convenient for exploring nearby attractions, including historic sites and charming small towns that reflect the cultural heritage of Appalachia.

This destination appeals to a wide range of RV travelers. Nature photographers will find endless subjects throughout the seasons. Families enjoy the combination of safe recreational facilities and natural educational opportunities. Retirees appreciate the peaceful setting and moderate activity options. Couples seeking romantic getaways find the serene riverside location perfect for quality time together. History buffs will appreciate the region's rich cultural significance and the stories woven into the landscape itself.

The moderate climate of the region allows for comfortable camping during spring, summer, and fall months, with each season offering its own distinctive charm. Spring brings wildflower blooms and flowing waterfalls fed by winter snowmelt. Summer offers warm days perfect for water activities and outdoor exploration. Fall transforms the hillsides into a canvas of brilliant colors, drawing visitors from across the country to witness nature's spectacular seasonal display. Even winter visits can be rewarding for those seeking solitude and peaceful landscapes.

My partner and I love staying at Bluestone. You actually get privacy and solitude, not to mention the beautiful sky’s each night. Chris in the visitor center is awesome, she is always sooo sweet and helpful! Candice seems to be who has cleaned each cabin we’ve stayed in and she does a phenomenal job as well- kudos to you too! We arrived to find out the refrigerator was not staying cold enough, we called the office within 10 minutes 2 very nice gentlemen arrived checked it and told us they would be right back with a replacement. They were back within 10 minutes and took out the old and brought in the replacement in a very short amount of time. Called for trash pickup and a nice gentleman arrived within minutes and took our trash. Highly recommend this park if you are looking for a beautiful and relaxing place to stay that has amazing staff and wonderful accommodations. There is also so much to do in West Virginia! We did the Overlook Trail. Not very well maintained (multiple trees and heavy brush fallen over trail) and the view is just OK once you reach the end. Walking along the ridge of the mountain towards the end is cool. Decent elevation change so physically good for you. Obviously not a well traveled route by the growth, but we were the only ones on the trail so relaxing hike.
