About American Camp Visitor Center

The American Camp visitor center is located on Cattle Point Road on the island's southern peninsula. This visitor center opened to the public in June of 2022 and features incredible new exhibits detailing the Coast Salish presence, military history of San Juan Island, and our island's ecology.

Located on San Juan Island in Washington, the American Camp Visitor Center offers a unique camping experience that seamlessly blends outdoor recreation with rich historical significance. This public campground serves as the gateway to understanding one of the Pacific Northwest's most compelling historical sites, where visitors can explore the grounds where American and British forces once faced off during the famous Pig War of 1859.

The setting itself is remarkable, positioned on a scenic portion of San Juan Island with sweeping views and access to pristine natural landscapes. The campground provides an excellent base for exploring the island's diverse attractions and outdoor activities. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding areas, offering opportunities to spot native wildlife and enjoy the island's natural beauty. The cooler maritime climate of the San Juan Islands creates comfortable camping conditions even during warmer months, with refreshing ocean breezes and the soothing sounds of the Salish Sea nearby.

For history enthusiasts, the American Camp Visitor Center is an invaluable resource. The interpretive programs and exhibits help bring to life the fascinating story of the 1859 boundary dispute between the United States and Great Britain over these islands. Walking the grounds where soldiers once stationed themselves provides a tangible connection to this unique moment in North American history. The visitor center itself offers educational displays and knowledgeable staff who can guide you through the area's compelling past.

The San Juan Islands are known for their stunning natural environment and outdoor recreation opportunities. Beyond the historical significance, campers enjoy access to beautiful beaches, tide pools teeming with marine life, and scenic viewpoints. The islands attract birdwatchers, nature photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Nearby towns offer dining, shopping, and additional cultural attractions.

This location appeals to travelers seeking a meaningful camping experience that combines education, history, and nature. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful island retreat in the Pacific Northwest, the American Camp Visitor Center provides an enriching destination for your RV adventure.
