About Pete Lake Backpacking Site

Campground in Washington.

Nestled in the North Cascades region of Washington, Pete Lake Backpacking Site offers a pristine wilderness experience for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This public campground serves as an ideal basecamp for adventurers looking to explore some of the Pacific Northwest's most stunning backcountry terrain.

The Pete Lake area is renowned for its crystalline alpine waters and dramatic mountain vistas. The lake itself sits at a moderate elevation, surrounded by dense coniferous forests that give way to rocky peaks and alpine meadows. The setting provides an authentic backcountry experience that appeals to serious hikers and backpackers who want to immerse themselves in nature without the crowds found at more developed campgrounds.

The primary draw for visitors to Pete Lake is its excellent hiking and backpacking opportunities. The area connects to established trails that wind through the North Cascades, offering routes suitable for various skill levels. Whether you're interested in a day hike from camp or a multi-day backpacking expedition, the surrounding terrain provides endless exploration possibilities. The lake itself is perfect for those who enjoy fishing, with opportunities to catch alpine trout in its cold, clear waters.

Wildlife viewing is another highlight of a Pete Lake visit. The area is home to marmots, mountain goats, pikas, and various bird species. Early morning and evening hours often reward visitors with sightings of these creatures in their natural habitat. The changing seasons bring different experiences, from wildflower-dotted meadows in summer to the dramatic snow-covered peaks of winter.

This backpacking site works best for self-sufficient campers who are comfortable with minimal facilities. It's perfect for those seeking solitude and raw natural beauty rather than modern conveniences. The proximity to the North Cascades National Park area means you're in prime territory for experiencing some of Washington's most iconic mountain landscapes. Easy and flat hike to the lake but with some river crossings and lots and lots of mosquitoes. Wear water proof hiking boots and bath in bug repellent before you go. Camp sites by the lake are limited.

Amazing hike in the PNW, pretty easy, but it's a long trek out to Pete lake but it's totally worth it, stunning lake nestled in the mountains.

Parking can be difficult. Biting insects troublesome on most of trail, but not really an issue once at lake. Results may vary.

The surroundings were green and fresh. The management did a great job keeping the area clean and well-lit. It was enjoyable to walk around and take in the calm environment.

We might have done this a bit early as the runoff had the creeks flowing high and fast. Fantastic hike.
