About Dry Creek Petrified Tree Environmental Education Area

The Dry Creek Petrified Tree Environmental Education Area is located about 13 miles east of Buffalo, Wyoming. The site offers visitors an opportunity to discover the history of the northeastern Wyoming landscape. About 60 million years ago these red sage hills and sagebrush country were a jungle-like swamp with towering Metasequoia trees. Many of these trees still exist as petrified wood. A 0.8 mile interpretive loop trail winds its way through portions of remnant petrified trees. Vault toilets

Nestled in the high plains of Wyoming, Dry Creek Petrified Tree Environmental Education Area offers a unique camping experience that blends natural wonder with educational opportunities. This public campground serves as a gateway to understanding Wyoming's prehistoric past while providing a peaceful retreat for RV travelers seeking something different from typical tourist destinations.

The centerpiece of this area is the remarkable petrified tree, a 50-million-year-old fossil that stands as a testament to the region's ancient volcanic history. Visitors can explore the educational trails and interpretive signage that explain the geological processes that created these fossilized remains. The setting provides excellent opportunities for amateur geologists and nature enthusiasts to learn about the Laramie Basin's complex geological story, including evidence of ancient forests and volcanic activity that shaped the landscape.

The surrounding high plains environment offers expansive views and a genuine sense of solitude that many RV campers crave. The semi-arid landscape with native grasses and scattered vegetation creates a distinctly Wyoming atmosphere. Early mornings and sunsets paint the plains in golden hues, providing stunning photo opportunities and peaceful moments for reflection. The clear skies make this an excellent location for stargazing, especially during the darker months when light pollution is minimal.

This location appeals particularly to travelers interested in geology, paleontology, and natural history. Families with children benefit from the educational aspects of the site, making it an enriching stop on cross-country RV journeys. The campground provides a more intimate, less crowded alternative to major tourist destinations, allowing visitors to experience Wyoming's raw natural character.

The high elevation contributes to pleasant summer temperatures, making it comfortable for camping during the warmest months. The area's isolation means minimal crowds and a genuine connection to the landscape. Whether you're taking a break from highway travel or planning a purposeful educational excursion, this environmental education area offers a meaningful Wyoming camping experience that educates while it entertains.

There was a turkey family that we enjoyed watching.

This is a wonderful campground! The park itself is beautiful, with deer and will turkeys roaming, and very nice trees and green grass. Obviously well cared-for. Ann, the person who greeted me, was very friendly and showed me to my site. All amenities were top notch, and on top of that the park-wide WiFi was ripping fast with no bottlenecks! Certainly would stay here again.

We stayed at Deer Park in our truck camper again this year during the Longmire Days festival. It is clean, well maintained, and conveniently located. Julie and Shaun were helpful and friendly. There are great places to walk our dogs and usually nice folks to meet and talk with. Would recommend and definitely plan to stay there again when in Buffalo in our camper!

We loved this park! We only stayed one night as it was a good stopping pount on our trip. I was very pleasantly surprised. The owners were so sweet, the park was well maintained, clean and the spots were very spacious. Quiet and lots of trees! I highly recommend if you're looking for a nice quiet place to relax.
