About Hole-in-the-Wall Foot Trail

The Hole-in-the-Wall is a colorful and scenic red sandstone escarpment that is rich in legend of outlaw activity from the late 1800s, most notably Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch Gang. The "hole" is a gap in the Red Wall that, legend has it, was used secretly by outlaws to move horses and cattle from the area. The area is primitive in nature, with no services. A three mile trail starts on State land and ends on BLM at the Hole in the Wall. Backcountry camping is allowed in the recreation area

Nestled in the rugged heart of Wyoming, Hole-in-the-Wall Foot Trail offers RV travelers an authentic connection to the American West and its storied past. This unique public campground provides access to one of Wyoming's most historically significant and geographically dramatic landscapes, where visitors can experience the raw beauty of the Bighorn Mountains and understand the region's rich frontier heritage.

The area surrounding Hole-in-the-Wall is steeped in Wild West history. This remote mountain pass earned its notorious reputation as a hideout for outlaws and rustlers during the late 1800s, including the famous Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. Today, adventurous travelers can explore the same rugged terrain that once sheltered these legendary figures, making it an exceptional destination for history enthusiasts and those seeking to understand Wyoming's colorful past.

The landscape itself is spectacular, characterized by dramatic rock formations, dense pine forests, and sweeping mountain vistas. The Bighorn Mountains create a stunning natural backdrop that changes throughout the day as light shifts across the granite peaks and weathered canyon walls. This is country that demands to be experienced slowly, where the pace of travel naturally slows to match the rhythm of nature.

The Hole-in-the-Wall Foot Trail itself offers excellent hiking opportunities for those ready to lace up their boots and explore on foot. The trail winds through terrain that reveals the area's geological wonders and provides multiple vantage points for photography and contemplation. The elevation and mountain setting create crisp, clear air and often spectacular starry nights away from light pollution.

This destination appeals especially to RV travelers who value history, outdoor recreation, and solitude. Those interested in Old West lore, geology, and hiking will find this location particularly rewarding. The remote nature of the area means you're getting away from crowded tourist destinations while still accessing meaningful attractions and outdoor experiences that showcase why Wyoming remains a premier RV travel destination.
