About Lance Creek Fossil Site

Part of the sage brush steppe, this fossil site offers rolling hills for hiking, hunting, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, photography, and dispersed camping. Motorized use is limited to designated roads.

Lance Creek Fossil Site offers a unique camping experience in the heart of Wyoming's paleontological treasure trove. Located in Niobrara County, this public campground serves as an ideal base for geology enthusiasts, fossil hunters, and adventure seekers who want to explore one of North America's most significant fossil beds. The Lance Formation, which gives this area its name, is famous for containing some of the world's best-preserved Late Cretaceous fossils, including remains of dinosaurs, ancient mammals, and other prehistoric creatures that roamed this region over 66 million years ago.

The landscape surrounding Lance Creek is quintessential high plains Wyoming, characterized by rolling badlands, dramatic eroded buttes, and wide-open vistas that stretch across the horizon. The terrain tells a geological story that spans millions of years, with colorful rock layers exposed in the hillsides, creating a natural classroom for those fascinated by Earth's ancient past. The climate here is typical of northeastern Wyoming, with cool evenings and clear night skies perfect for stargazing after a day of exploration.

This location appeals particularly to fossil enthusiasts, geology students, academic researchers, and families interested in natural history. Amateur paleontologists will find numerous opportunities to observe exposed fossils and understand the geological processes that preserved them. The remote setting provides a peaceful retreat from crowded tourist destinations, allowing visitors to experience the raw beauty of Wyoming's backcountry. Photographers will appreciate the dramatic landscapes and unique lighting conditions created by the badlands terrain.

The nearest services and supplies can be found in nearby small communities, so visitors should plan accordingly and arrive prepared. The isolation that makes Lance Creek special also means a more self-sufficient camping experience. This is an excellent destination for those seeking authentic western adventure and a genuine connection to the natural world and its deep history. Whether you're a serious fossil collector or simply curious about prehistoric life, Lance Creek Fossil Site provides an unforgettable Wyoming camping experience.

This park was a nice place to go for a hike. Loved the red soil. They have picnic tables all around so we got to do a little picnic after our hike.

Absolutely gorgeous! It was my youngest son's first camping trip and we couldn't have chosen a more beautiful spot! If you're visiting Wyoming, Glendo is a must!

It was good. Not any close stores. There was a Fire ban so no campfire unless it’s propane. You have to drive pretty much everywhere depending on where your staying

WOWZER!! This place is incredible...beyond words. I could totally live here. There are so many different areas to get to. Lots of camping and RV'n areas we only made it to part of it and the 12 it cost us to get in was worth it. It was man made and they did a great job. Be proud.

This park is absolutely beautiful. We will definitely be back after our 3 night stay at Sandy Beach Dune. Our spot was right on the water but since the water level is lower this year the beach activities were further away. Be aware spots near the shore lines have a ton of ants. They do not bite you but are on everything and everywhere. The beach was absolutely clean and the views were incredible.
