About Buffalo Hump WSA

The Buffalo Hump Wilderness Study Area (WSA) encompasses 10,300 acres of BLM-administered land with no private or state inholdings. This is a sand dune area of many sand valleys, blowouts, dunes and hills. The northern and western part of the area contains ponds, grass-covered marshes and playas. Buffalo Hump Wilderness Study Area offers a unique camping experience for those seeking solitude and authentic outdoor adventure in the heart of Wyoming's rugged landscape. Located in one of the state's most distinctive geological regions, this public campground provides access to some truly remarkable terrain that showcases the raw beauty of the American West.

The Buffalo Hump area is characterized by its dramatic badlands formations, colorful clay hills, and vast open spaces that stretch across the horizon. Campers here will find themselves surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes Wyoming special, with golden and rust-colored hillsides that shift in appearance throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. The landscape is relatively undeveloped, which means you're experiencing this region much as it has been for generations, making it ideal for travelers who want to escape the crowds and development found at many traditional RV parks.

This location appeals particularly to outdoor enthusiasts interested in geology, photography, and backcountry exploration. The terrain invites hiking, with numerous opportunities to venture into the surrounding wilderness and discover hidden vistas. The open country is perfect for stargazing, and visitors often comment on the exceptional clarity of the night sky away from light pollution. Wildlife viewing is another draw, as the area is home to various species adapted to the high desert environment.

The nearest towns offer basic services and supplies, allowing campers to stock up on necessities before settling in at the campground. The region is suitable for self-sufficient travelers who are comfortable with primitive camping conditions and appreciate the independence of exploring remote public lands. Spring and fall typically offer the most pleasant weather for visiting, though hardy travelers camp here year-round.

Whether you're interested in painting or photographing the striking landscape, exploring the geological wonders, or simply disconnecting from everyday life in a place of natural beauty, Buffalo Hump Wilderness Study Area delivers an authentic Wyoming camping experience that rewards those seeking something beyond the ordinary.
